How to Move Well
I’m moving. Gah.
All the clever people always tell us this is one of the things you can do to bring on some serious stress. That and getting married, getting unmarried, getting a new job etc etc.
Herein lies some attempts I'm making to move well and make the process as breezy, eco and happy as possible.
1. Get rid of stuff
First things first is that I am taking time to work out what I need or love. With moving you get a moment to look at everything you own and to see what you have or haven’t used, what you love and what has just made it’s way into your space with no rhyme or reason. So as I move I’m taking stock. I’m taking clothes I don’t wear to the charity shops and I’m getting rid of nicknacks I’ve forgotten the story behind. William Morris famously advised to ‘have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.’ I love that. Function and form. The well made and the well used. Everything else I’m recycling and passing over to someone else to enjoy through websites like Freecycle and Gumtree. Marie Kondo writes about the process of dealing with objects that don’t spark joy and streamlining too. With all this in mind I’m going to end up with an even simpler space, not filled to the brim with bits, but intentionally dotted with beautiful and functional things.
2. Pack well
Through my friend over at Litterless I learned that there is such a thing as a service that drops off and picks up reusable moving boxes for a pretty alright fee. The thing is that Celia, the gal behind Litterless, is in the USA and after a little research it seemed that the only companies I found that did this in the UK were based up north (gap in the market anyone?). With little time to find another plan I headed to my local corner shop and over a few days have been collecting the cardboard boxes they were planning to throw away. While this won’t end up making this move an entirely waste free one, I’m re-using and recycling (and making a plan for a moving boxes business!).
3. Plan a nice reward for after you have finished!
Beyond the essentials of backing the packing process up with good music in the background and regular cups of tea, I’ve got the prospect of the beach at the end of moving. I know making sure I have set aside time to relax and rest after days of heavy lifting, inhaling dust and general mania is a pretty important part of the plan.
